From 18 to 21 April, the Municipality of Porto, in partnership with Coliseu do Porto Ageas and the Batalha Film Centre, will be present at the Portugal Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka with a programme that brings together music, cinema and literature, highlighting the cultural ties between Porto and Japan.
Composer António Pinho Vargas will perform on 20 April in an intimate piano recital, presenting some of the most significant works of his career. A leading figure in contemporary Portuguese music, he brings to Expo Osaka a synthesis of his unique musical language—somewhere between jazz and classical—in a concert that invites thoughtful listening and a meeting of cultures.

Over four days, the late afternoons at the Portugal Pavilion will be enriched by performances from Alexandre Soares. The musician and composer will present four original pieces inspired by haikus by Matsuo Bashō, Masaoka Shiki, José Tolentino de Mendonça and Gonçalo M. Tavares. This multidisciplinary creation blends sound, text and live performance in a poetic dialogue between Japanese and Portuguese traditions.
Also featured will be the film Na Faina do Argaço, by Mariana Vilanova, which explores the harvesting of sargassum seaweed in northern Portugal, drawing connections between traditional knowledge and modern technology in a reflection on sustainability and circularity.
Portugal participates in Expo Osaka under the theme 'Ocean, the Blue Dialogue', promoting intercultural dialogue and a commitment to preserving the ocean.
