NOVA University Lisbon, Portugal, officially marked the beginning of its participation in Expo 2025 Osaka, Japan, this Saturday, 26 July, with the signing of a cooperation agreement with Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS).
The ceremony took place at the Portugal Pavilion and was attended by NOVA’s Rector, João Sàágua, Vice-Rector João Amaro de Matos, and Pro-Rector José Branco.
“This moment symbolises a new phase in Portuguese-Japanese academic cooperation, paving the way for research networks, student exchanges and joint projects that will benefit the entire academic community,” stated Rector João Sàágua.

Also in attendance were the Ambassador of Portugal to Japan, Gilberto Jerónimo, the Commissioner-General for Portugal’s participation in Expo 2025 Osaka, Joana Gomes Cardoso, and the Director of the Portugal Pavilion, Bernardo Amaral.
NOVA’s participation ran until 28 July and featured projects addressing global challenges with innovative and sustainable solutions, aligned with the theme of the Portugal Pavilion – Ocean, Blue Dialogue – and areas such as new technologies and global health.

Visitors could also enjoy immersive experiences, including virtual reality visits to Portuguese heritage sites and interaction with the Smart Cities platform developed by NOVA IMS.
